Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Chan Buddhism and the cradle of Shaolin Kung Fu. Located at the foot of Songshan Mountain in Dengfeng, Henan Province, this temple was founded in 495 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty. As we walk through the gates, you will feel the sacred atmosphere that has attracted monks, warriors, and pilgrims for over 1,500 years.
Our first stop is the Main Hall, or Mahavira Hall, where the monks perform daily rituals. Notice the intricate carvings and the serene statues of Buddhas. Behind the hall lies the famous Pagoda Forest, a cemetery of more than 240 stone pagodas built from the Tang to the Qing dynasties. Each pagoda marks the tomb of an eminent monk, and their varied styles reflect different historical periods. Please walk carefully and do not touch the ancient stones.
Next, we will visit the Dharma Hall, where Bodhidharma, the first patriarch of Chan Buddhism, meditated for nine years facing a wall. Legend says his intense focus wore his shadow into the rock. Here you can see a replica of that shadow stone. Also, look for the shallow indentation on the floor, said to be left by monks practicing standing meditation. This hall remains an active place of worship, so please keep your voices low.
Now we enter the Kung Fu Training Hall, the heart of Shaolin martial arts. For centuries, monks have practiced here to strengthen both body and mind. You will see worn depressions in the brick floor, created by countless footsteps during stance training. If we are lucky, a short demonstration by young warrior monks may be arranged. Remember, photography is allowed but do not use flash or stand in the training area.
Finally, we walk to the Tallinn, or Pagoda Forest, which I mentioned earlier. This is the largest pagoda forest in China. Each pagoda has an inscription and a brief biography of the monk buried beneath. Notice how earlier pagodas are simple and square, while later ones become octagonal and ornate. Before we leave, please take a moment to enjoy the view of Songshan Mountain. The temple closes at 5 PM, so we have about twenty minutes to explore on your own. Please return to the main gate by 4:50. Thank you for your attention, and enjoy your visit to this extraordinary spiritual and martial heritage site.
